There are many ways to refresh your teeth and give them a new lease of life, with some popular treatments including composite bonding, veneers, and Invisalign.

However, one treatment we would certainly recommend to revive your pearly whites is teeth whitening, an effective and affordable treatment used by many patients to bring the whiteness back to their smiles.

Teeth can inevitably lose their natural whiteness due to ageing, diet, smoking, physical trauma or medications you may be prescribed. Teeth whitening can dramatically transform your smile by removing the appearance of stains that have built up over time.

How Does Teeth Whitening Work?

Teeth whitening works by safely bleaching your teeth to make them several shades lighter. The bleaching process breaks down the stains on the surfaces of your teeth to give the appearance of a whiter, brighter smile.

When administered by a professional dentist, teeth whitening will not make your teeth appear brilliant white, but will instead give them a natural appearance that is certain to get your white teeth noticed! You can also choose exactly how much whiter you’d like your teeth to be, whether that’s one subtle shade lighter or several shades whiter to restore them to their full glory.

Types of Teeth Whitening Treatment

At St Helier Dental Surgery, there are two main types of teeth whitening treatment. You can choose from our in-surgery whitening treatment carried out in our clinic, or our at-home teeth whitening which is performed in the comfort of your own home.

During your first appointment with us, we’ll talk you through each option available to you in order to allow you to make an informed decision.

In-Surgery Teeth Whitening

In-surgery teeth whitening, also known as laser bleaching, is a quick treatment that consists of applying whitening gel to the teeth with a bright light to activate the gel. The quick process takes less than two hours and can require just one trip to our clinic.

At-Home Teeth Whitening

Our at-home teeth whitening treatment gives you the freedom of carrying out your own treatment in your own home. Impressions are taken of your teeth (in our clinic) so that we can provide you with custom whitening trays that you can comfortably wear at home. We also provide you with a bleaching gel for you to wear for a specific length of time. We’ll then schedule a follow-up appointment to check your teeth have been successfully lightened.

How Long Does Teeth Whitening Take?

If you’re in a rush for a white smile due to an upcoming event, you’ll be pleased to know that teeth whitening can take as little as two hours and can be done in one session with our in-surgery whitening treatment.

Alternatively, our at-home teeth whitening kits usually take a couple of weeks (depending on your desired outcome) and are a more effective method compared to our in-surgery whitening treatment.

When you visit us for a consultation, we’ll talk you through your desired results and find the best and most suitable whitening option for you.

Can You Have Teeth Whitening When Pregnant?

While there is no evidence to suggest that teeth whitening is harmful during pregnancy, there also isn’t sufficient evidence to suggest that it is safe during pregnancy either.

In the UK, it is illegal to carry out teeth whitening on women who are pregnant or breastfeeding, so if you do fall under this criteria, you will, unfortunately, need to wait until it is safe to have the treatment.

Where Can I Go for Teeth Whitening?

We would always strongly advise only having teeth whitening carried out by a dental hygienist or a dental professional who is registered with the General Dental Council. Having this registration ensures that a dentist is qualified and legally able to provide teeth whitening treatment to patients.

With that being said, there are many salons out there that are providing illegal teeth whitening treatment without the relevant qualifications. This is illegal and should only be performed by a registered dentist.

How Much Does Teeth Whitening Cost?

Teeth whitening will vary depending on your desired outcome and how quickly you’d like whiter teeth, whether that be several weeks or within a day. We recommend visiting us for a consultation for a free quote.
