Surrounded by friends and family, Dora Sue Beck Whitman, age 83 of Albertville, sadly passed away Sunday, April 14, 2024, at Shepherd’s Cove Hospice.

Sue was born May 7, 1940, to Leon and Catherine Beck in Union Grove.

She is a member of the Marshall County High School Class of 1958, and she later attended Snead State Community College.

Sue worked for more than 30 years at Redstone Arsenal in Huntsville as an office administrator.

As a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother, there was nothing that brought joy to Sue’s heart quite like her family.

But her greatest love was for the Lord Jesus Christ. A longtime member of Solitude Baptist Church, Sue was strong in her faith and exemplified Christ-like love in her daily walk.

The family invites friends and loved ones to attend a Celebration of Life ceremony, which will be held at a later date.

Sue is preceded in death by her parents, Leon and Catherine Beck; son, Robert Floyd Whitman; and great-grandson, Charles Joshua David Logan.

She is survived by her husband of 66 years, L.C. “Pete” Whitman; sister, Ann (Robert) Bell; daughters, Kathi Whitman and Cricket Sanders; and sons, Tommy (Kay) Whitman and Matt (Ariel) Cain; grandchildren, Nikki (Adam) Earl, Ashley (Randy) Miller, Chance (Crystal) Snyder, Whitney Conner, Katie (Ricky) Simpson, Kelly (Taylor) Beck, and Senior Airman Samuel T. Whitman; and a host of extended grandchildren and great-grandchildren.

JoAnn Kilgore

Boaz

JoAnn Kilgore, 93, of Boaz, formerly of Hokes Bluff and Gadsden, passed away on April 14, 2024. A graveside service will be at Crestwood Cemetery on Wednesday, April 17, 2024, at 11 a.m. James Wallace and David Cofield will officiate the service.

Mrs. Kilgore will be remembered for being a kind Christian lady, and most recently a member of First Baptist of Boaz. She accepted Christ into her heart as a young child. She was a former member of East Gadsden Baptist, Immanuel Baptist of Hokes Bluff, and Goodyear Heights Baptist of Glencoe.

She had a love of fitness. She walked several miles per day and swam religiously at the hospital therapy pool. She also swam for many years at the Gadsden YMCA. She was an accomplished artist, and drawing/painting old home places were a favorite. She also lettered signs for Hokes Bluff schools and others years ago.

She graduated from Gadsden High School in 1948 and later raised her family in Hokes Bluff. She later took classes at Gadsden State and Snead State colleges where she took real estate and art.

She loved all things nautical, especially sea turtles. She has always been a bird watcher. (Unfortunately, so were Lynne’s cats through the years at Hokes Bluff, and even now.) She was a loving wife, mother and friend that will be greatly missed.

She was preceded in death by her parents, James Carl and Martha Stanford; sisters, Elizabeth Stanford Clark and Catherine Stanford Hathaway; brother, James “Sonny” Stanford Jr. that was killed in the USS Bennington explosion while serving his country as a U.S. Marine; and her beloved son, James Keith Kilgore.

She is survived by daughter, Lynne Kilgore; and numerous nieces and nephews; grandsons, Daniel (Jessica), Cary (Lauren), Allen (Ashleigh); and eight great-grandchildren.

Special thanks to the ER, ICU staff and team of doctors at Marshall Medical Center South for their kindness and efforts to save JoAnn’s life.
